The General Residence Homestead Exemption reduces the taxable value of your home, potentially reducing your property taxes. To qualify:
- The property must be your primary residence.
- You must have ownership interest in the property.
- You cannot claim a homestead exemption on another residence, either in Texas or anywhere else.
If you buy a home after January 1, you may qualify for the exemption for the remainder of the year, if the previous owner was not already claiming the exemption.
Homeowners are not required to reapply for the exemption annually. Once the exemption is received and approved, it generally remains in effect as long as the homeowner continues to qualify. Circumstances that may affect eligibility include, but are not limited to, the property no longer being the homeowner’s primary residence, the death of an applicant, or no response to a request from the appraisal district for documentation needed to verify continued eligibility, such as a Homestead Audit Verification letter. Please note that the exemption recipient or their legal representative is responsible for notifying the appraisal district of any change in residency or eligibility status.
Remember that there is never a fee to apply for exemptions or for any appraisal district services.
To apply online, visit www.bcad.org, click Online Services, and create a login. Upload a copy of your Texas Driver’s License or TX ID card showing the same address as the property. Active military members without a Texas Driver’s License or TX ID card may submit a copy of their military ID and a utility bill for the property.
If you prefer not to apply online, you can request a form by mail, or download it at www.bcad.org under Forms. The Texas Driver’s License or TX ID card rules still apply. Then submit your form and the required supporting documentation electronically via our online contact form located at help.bcad.org, or by mail, fax, or in person using the contact information below.
