Property owners in Texas have the option to designate a representative, often called a tax consultant or property tax agent, to assist them with property tax matters. This article explains what tax consultants can do, how to authorize one, and how to remove one if needed.
What Is a Tax Consultant?
A tax consultant (or property tax agent) is a person or company authorized to act on behalf of a property owner in matters related to property taxes. This may include:
- Communicating with the appraisal district
- Filing exemption applications
- Protesting property values
- Receiving notices related to your property
Tax consultants are private businesses and typically charge a fee for their services. Fees and payment structures may vary, so property owners are encouraged to review any agreement carefully before signing.
While hiring a tax consultant is optional, many property owners choose to manage their property tax matters on their own at no cost.
Please note: The Appraisal District is not affiliated with any tax consultants or property tax agents and cannot recommend or endorse any individual or agent company.
